MASSAGE AND MEDICINE BY RENATA FRANÇA In an interview with Renata França, creator of the massage most desired by celebrities, doctors discuss their specialties and the health benefits of massage. RENATA FRANÇA: Dr. Gilberto, what are the most common vascular diseases affecting the population? GILBERTO NARCHI RABAHIE: Venous diseases are more frequent. About 37% of the Brazilian population has varicose veins (dilation of superficial veins in the lower limbs) of various degrees. Deep vein thrombosis, the formation of a clot in the veins of the leg or thigh muscles, is believed to have 180,000 new cases per year. RF: Can we say that some have a genetic root? If so, which ones? GNR: Varicose veins and thromboses can have a genetic cause. Arterial diseases, such as aneurysms (dilation that can rupture and lead to severe hemorrhages) and obstructive atherosclerotic disease (fat plaques causing vessel occlusion) may also have a genetic condition associated, in addition to dietary factors and smoking. RF: Is it possible to prevent a vascular disease? How? GNR: Yes, it is possible. Those most susceptible are individuals with some degree of risk factor imbalance. Sedentary lifestyle, smoking, obesity, arterial hypertension, diabetes, and familial or acquired hypercholesterolemia are the most important in relation to cardiovascular diseases. Controlling them is fundamental for prevention. RF: What is your opinion on lymphatic drainage for patients with vascular problems? GNR: Lymphatic drainage will only be efficient when well indicated. We cannot use it for all vascular conditions, and it should not be confused with massage, which is always pleasant. And it must be performed by a qualified professional. RF: Can someone with varicose veins receive lymphatic drainage? GNR: Yes, they can. Lymphatic drainage is not an integral part of the treatment, but there is no contraindication for varicose veins. It is very important and must be performed by a qualified professional. It is worth remembering that it is part of a set of measures that involve oral medications to improve edema, occasional use of antibiotics, and elastic compression with appropriate stockings. RF: For which post-operative cases do you recommend lymphatic drainage? GNR: It can be indicated depending on the type of surgery, which can lead to temporary lymphatic changes. RF: When can it be indicated immediately post-surgery? GNR: It can be performed in some plastic surgeries whose post-operative period leads to temporary edema, which can be minimized with drainage. In varicose vein surgeries, it is not a standard indication. However, if the post-operative period involves lower limb edema, drainage can also be effective. RF: Are there any contraindications? GNR: Yes, in cases of venous thrombosis and edema without a known cause. DR. GILBERTO NARCHI RABAHIE Vascular surgeon at the Heart Hospital (HCor) CRM: 44.224
